The U.S. government does not regulate what you eat. It does regulate what
people are allowed to sell you that is labelled as being fit for human
consumption. The reason for that type of regulation is a very simple one:
once the society developed to the point where a significant fraction of
the people were not raising their own food, they discovered that they
could not rely on the manufacturers of food to supply them with stuff
that was fit to eat unless the government was looking over the shoulders
of the food manufacturers. I suggest that you read _The Jungle_ by
Upton Sinclair, which, much to his surprise, led to a public outcry that
eventually led to the passage of the Pure Food and Drug Act.
